Mike Crawford Michael Sampson Crawford, to his astonishment, was born and raised in Kenai, Alaska. Seeking to free himself from small town life after graduating high school, he failed miserably and remained in Alaska to attend the University of Alaska Fairbanks. There he studied physics, and learned the exact temperature necessary to freeze one’s eyelashes together. Moving out of State like shrapnel from a cannon, Michael attended the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, in Socorro, NM. Again in a small town, geography put into sharp relief what his life was missing: the Ocean.

Graduating with degrees in Astrophysics and Mathematics, and a vivid understanding of dehydration, he moved back up to Alaska, where his parents, as a graduation gift, gave him sailing lessons. Armed with rudimentary knowledge and a vague desire never to be cold or landlocked again, he bought a one-way airplane ticket to San Diego, CA, where he crewed on sailboats down into Mexico’s Pacific Coast. Delaying graduate school, he and a Brett bought Project Mayhem in San Diego, and sailed it to the South Pacific. Living and working in Oceania, he has taught celestial navigation in New Zealand, run golf tournaments in Fiji, built houses in Tonga, fought off sharks in the Tuamotus, and prefers sunscreen to snowshoes.
